P&L and Balance Sheet: Manual Entry vs Import

P&L and Balance Sheet: Manual Entry vs Import

TinyTax lets you enter your P&L and balance sheet figures in two ways: manually (typing them in directly) or by importing from accounting software. Both options are available on the filing form — the Import button is optional, not a required first step.

Manual Entry (Default)

The manual entry fields are always visible on the filing form. You do not need to click any button to enable them.

  1. Open the filing form and scroll to the Profit & Loss section.
  2. You will see a table with rows for Turnover, Staff costs, Other charges, and so on.
  3. Click into the current year column next to each row and type your figure directly.
  4. Repeat for the Balance Sheet section below.
There is no "Enter figures manually" button — the fields are always present and always editable.

Trial Balance Import (Optional)

The Import button in the Profit & Loss section header opens a dialog that lets you paste or upload a trial balance from accounting software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or a spreadsheet in our CSV format). TinyTax then maps the accounts to the correct CT600 fields automatically.

The import is a helpful shortcut if you have accounting software that can export a trial balance in the required format. If you prepared your accounts in your own spreadsheet or document, manual entry is simpler.

Common Questions

I clicked Import and my figures ended up in the wrong places. What do I do?

The import CSV must use TinyTax's required column format. If you uploaded a general Excel spreadsheet, figures will often be misplaced. To fix this, scroll to the P&L table and type the correct values into each row directly — your typed values replace whatever the import entered.

Can I mix import and manual entry?

Yes. Use the import for most figures and then manually correct any rows that mapped incorrectly by clicking into those fields and updating them.
