How can I open an account as an agent. I am not a Ltd company and cannot select from your pull down menu.

There is no separate agent account type, and you do not need to be a limited company yourself — that is why nothing in the company drop-down fitted. You sign up as yourself, with your own email address and password.

Once you are in, you add each client company to your dashboard by searching for it by name or company number. One login covers as many client companies as your plan allows.

The agent choice comes later, at the submission step. There you pick "Tax agent" rather than "Company director", and enter your own agent Government Gateway ID and password together with the client's company UTR. Your client does not need to be present or hand over their own Gateway login.

Two things need to be in place on HMRC's side before an agent submission will go through:

- your agent Government Gateway account must have Corporation Tax enrolled
- HMRC must hold an active agent authorisation (64-8) for that client

One thing the agent credentials do not cover: if you are also filing the accounts at Companies House, that leg uses the client's own six-character Companies House authentication code. That is separate from the Government Gateway and is always required, agent or not.

Fuller detail is in /support/filing-as-tax-agent and /support/tax-agent-multiple-companies.
