Different Accounting Periods for HMRC and Companies House

I have different filing periods for HMRC and Companies House. Does your software support that?

Thanks for getting in touch! We'd love to help — could you clarify a couple of things so we can point you in the right direction?

1. Has the company recently started trading? We can see it's been filing dormant accounts to Companies House with a 30 June year end up to now.

2. Has HMRC sent you a notice to file a Corporation Tax return (CT600)? If so, what period dates does it show (e.g. "1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025")? This is usually a letter or a message in your HMRC online account.

Once we know the details we can let you know exactly how TinyTax can help.

Hi Tim,

Many thanks for the fast response.

To answer your questions:-

The company was set up years ago and has never traded. I have always submitted Micro Entity Accounts to Companies House and HMRC via the gov.uk online web filing.

My last submission (on 10/01/2025) to HMRC was for the period: 01/04/2023 to 31/03/2024.

kind regards,

Robin

Sorry, I forgot to mention - the company has never traded.

Thanks for clarifying — that's really helpful.

Since your company has never traded, it's worth checking whether HMRC actually requires you to file a CT600 return. If HMRC hasn't sent you a notice to file (a "notice to deliver a Company Tax Return"), you may not need to submit one at all. You can check this in your HMRC online account, or call HMRC's Corporation Tax helpline (0300 200 3410) to confirm. If the company is dormant, you can also let HMRC know and they'll stop expecting returns — there's guidance on GOV.UK under "tell HMRC your company is dormant for Corporation Tax".

If you do need to file, TinyTax can handle your custom dates. When you start a filing, you'll see your periods based on your Companies House year end (30 June). To set custom dates to match your HMRC period (1 April – 31 March):

1. Select a future period from the dropdown (one that hasn't ended yet)

2. A modal will appear — click "Set final return dates"

3. Enter your HMRC period dates (e.g. 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025)

You'd then do a separate filing with your 30 June dates for Companies House accounts.
