How to Upgrade Your Subscription Plan
Learn how to upgrade your subscription plan to file for more companies. Self-service upgrade with automatic proration.
If your current plan doesn't cover the filing you need — for example, you're on Dormant but your company has traded — you can upgrade directly from your billing page. No need to cancel and resubscribe.
How to Upgrade
- Log in to your TinyTax account
- Go to your Billing page
- Find the plan you'd like to upgrade to (e.g. Solo)
- Click the Upgrade button (e.g. "Upgrade to Solo")
- A confirmation dialog shows exactly what you'll pay — the prorated difference for the remainder of your current billing year
- Click Confirm to complete the upgrade

What About the Money I've Already Paid?
When you upgrade, Stripe automatically applies a prorated credit for the unused portion of your current subscription. You only pay the difference between what you've already paid and the new plan price, adjusted for the remaining time on your billing cycle.
For example, if you're on Dormant Annual (£20/year) and upgrade to {{soloPlanName}} Annual ({{soloPrice}}/year) three months in, you'll be charged approximately the price difference (£39) prorated for the remaining 9 months. The exact amount is shown in the confirmation dialog before you're charged.
After Upgrading
- All your existing filing data, companies, and submissions are preserved
- Any filings you've already started or submitted remain unchanged
- The upgrade simply unlocks the ability to file trading CT600s and full accounts (if upgrading from Dormant)
When Do I Need to Upgrade?
| Situation | Current Plan | Upgrade To |
|---|---|---|
| Company has traded (any income or expenses) | Dormant | Solo |
| Need to file for more than one company | Dormant or Solo | Portfolio |
| Company is dormant, only one company | Dormant | No upgrade needed |
Dormant → Solo
Your company has traded during the accounting period — it has income, expenses, or other financial activity. The Dormant plan only covers companies with zero activity, so you need Solo to file a trading CT600 and full accounts.
Dormant → Portfolio
You have multiple companies and at least one has traded. Portfolio covers unlimited filings for up to 100 companies (trading and dormant) under one subscription.
Solo → Portfolio
You're already filing for one trading company but now need to file for additional companies. Solo locks to one company, so Portfolio is needed for multiple companies.
Common Questions
"I'm on Dormant but my company has traded — do I need to upgrade?"
Yes. The Dormant plan is for companies with no trading activity. If your company has traded during the accounting period, you'll need at least a Solo plan to file a trading CT600 and full accounts.
Can I downgrade my plan?
Plan downgrades are not available through self-service. If you need to change to a lower-tier plan, contact us at hello@tinytax.co.uk.
I upgraded but still can't file for my second company
Make sure you've added the company to your account first. Go to your Dashboard, click Add Company, and enter the company number. Once added, you'll be able to start a filing for it.
The upgrade button isn't showing
Check that:
- You're logged into the correct account
- You have an active subscription (not expired or cancelled)
- You're on the Billing page, not the pricing page
Will I lose my data if I upgrade?
No. Upgrading preserves all your existing companies, filing data, and submission history. Nothing is deleted or reset.
